Mirai botnet
Mirai (Japanese for "future") is a form of malware that targets networked devices running Linux, such as routers and IP cameras, turning them into remotely controlled "bots". These bots are then used as a network, or "botnet," to perform large-scale network attacks, most notably distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.
How it works:
  • Mirai scans the internet for Internet of Things (IoT) devices with weak security.
  • It specifically targets devices with open Telnet ports that still use factory-default usernames and passwords.
  • Once a device is compromised, it is forced to download the malware, becoming a "bot" in the Mirai botnet.
  • The bot then awaits instructions from a command-and-control server to launch attacks.
Key incidents:
  • OVH attack (September 2016): A massive DDoS attack was launched against the French web host.
  • Krebs on Security attack (September 2016): A large DDoS attack took down the website of journalist Brian Krebs, who investigated the Mirai creators.
  • Dyn attack (October 2016): An attack on the domain name service provider Dyn caused widespread internet outages across Europe and the U.S., affecting major sites like Twitter, Netflix, and Amazon.
  • Deutsche Telekom attack (November 2016): Mirai attempted to infect nearly a million DSL routers, causing internet connectivity issues for many customers.
The aftermath:
  • Original creators: In 2017, the botnet's creators, Paras Jha and Josiah White, pleaded guilty to charges related to the Mirai botnet. They had been using it as part of a "protection racket" to extort money from companies.
  • Source code release: Before being caught, the authors released Mirai's source code online. This allowed other cybercriminals to create new versions and variants, ensuring the botnet's legacy and continued threat.
  • Continuing evolution: Variants of Mirai, including "Wicked," "Satori," and "Gorilla Botnet," continue to appear, evolving with new exploits and tactics to target insecure IoT devices.
